Youth basketball uniforms are more than just smaller sized versions of your youngster’s favorite Collegiate or NBA team and player. Those shorts and jerseys represent their hopes and dreams, regardless of whether they wear the colors of the most recent National Champion, or the perennial last place team. It’s what the uniform means to them when they put it on that’s most important.

When I play basketball with my 8 year old son, there is no chance that he will be able to dunk the ball (not even with his impressive 10″ vertical leap). But when he plays with his Duke Blue Devil jersey on (which I still don’t understand since I went to Georgia Tech) he thinks he’s playing for the National Championship. That basketball jersey is his personal youth basketball uniform, and wearing it makes him feel as though he’s part of a greater team, and that somehow some of the talent of all those great players and teams will be transferred to him.

The same is true for all those fans, young and old, who wear the shorts of their favorite NBA team for a pick up game at the park. Not only are we showing our support for our favorite team, but somewhere in the back of our minds, we feel that by wearing the same shorts and/or jerseys their spirit will be with us. Maybe this explains why Michael Jordan (the greatest basketball player of all time) wore his North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls shorts during every one of his professional games – to always keep the memory of his last second jump shot to win the National Title (as a Freshman) with him.

Whether it’s the colors, the team logo, or the memory of a particular season, game, shot, or favorite player, when we wear the same uniform to show our support we all feel as though we are part of a greater family, all with a common interest – the love of “our team”.

Today’s youth basketball uniforms are officially licensed by Nike (NCAA) and Adidas (NBA), This means that they are manufactured with the same quality materials and craftsmanship as your favorite professional or college team apparel. Who knows, maybe the jersey or performance shorts you’re getting your son for his birthday were cut from the same bolt of fabric as LeBron James’s game uniform or those being worn by the newest National Champions?

It is the rare athlete that gets to play professional sports, but that doesn’t mean that with a little bit of luck, you can end up making a truly memorable shot, like one of these…
